Humperdink Hansel & Gretel Overture
Rachmaninov Rhapsody On A Theme Of Paganini
Beethoven Symphony No.5
Conductor Fabien Gabel
Piano Alexandra Dariescu
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
The legend that the violin virtuoso Paganini sold his soul to the devil, in order to become legendary, has inspired numerous composers, including Brahms and Andrew Lloyd Webber, but one of the finest variations of the theme is considered to be Rachmaninov‘s Rhapsody On A Theme Of Paganini.
Performed by the supremely talented Alexandra Dariescu, who wowed audiences with her performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.21 at Royal & Derngate in 2014, this piece ranges from ghostly stirrings to demonic marches, soft light-heartedness to scintillating wit.
This springtime concert opens with Humperdink‘s dreamy Hansel And Gretel Overture, which firmly establishes the mood of his enchanted tale. Closing the concert will be one of the most instantly recognisable pieces of classical music, Beethoven‘s Symphony No. 5. Opening with four imposing chords, this piece has been sampled in every genre, from rock to disco, and here is your chance to hear it in its full glory.
