Community Casting Announcement – Our Lady Of Kibeho

Royal & Derngate are looking for members of the local community to form a new acting company.

The new group, Royal & Derngate Community Ensemble, will be given the chance to participate in workshops with a team of theatre professionals before appearing on our Royal stage in Our Lady Of Kibeho. This play, written by Katori Hall, will form part of the 2019 Made in Northampton season. Royal & Derngate Artistic Director, James Dacre will be directing.

In 1981 at Kibeho College in Rwanda, a young girl claimed to have seen a vision of the Virgin Mary who spoke to her of a coming genocide. She was ignored by her friends and scolded by her school but then another student saw the vision, and another, and the impossible appeared to be true.

Katori Hall’s Our Lady of Kibeho presents us with a haunting insight into the true events that captured the world’s attention, it was hailed “the most important play of the year” by the Wall Street Journal when it premiered in New York.

Featuring stirring original music, the UK premiere of Our Lady of Kibeho promises to be an epic event and we would like our community to be part of it.

We are looking to appoint a black cast to represent members of the Rwandan community. This community ensemble will be involved as characters in the play and although you will not have a speaking role, you may be expected to sing and to move as a group. You do not need any previous drama, dance or singing experience at all to take part, just a willingness to learn in relaxed and enjoyable sessions.

Applicants must be over 16 years of age to take part.

This is a unique opportunity to work with a professional acting company and exceptional creative team at Royal & Derngate.

The work is voluntary.
