CASTING CALL FOR ACTORS IN THE EAST MIDLANDS

As part of our commitment to providing opportunities for local talent we are holding an audition session for our upcoming Christmas show THE JUNGLE BOOK in Northampton.

Written by Jessica Swale whose Olivier Award winning Nell Gwyn has just completed a national tour and directed by Max Webster who directed our production of King Lear last year and has more recently directed the national tour of The Twits, this is a newly commissioned version of Rudyard Kipling’s classic stories.

It is a co-production with Children’s Touring Partnership whose previous shows include Goodnight Mr Tom, Swallows and Amazons, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and the current tour of Michael Morpurgo’s Running Wild and will tour nationally following its run in Northampton.

Dates:

Rehearsals begin in Northampton on Monday 23 October 2017

Tech week commences on Monday 20 November 2017

First preview Tuesday 28 November 2017

Press night Friday 1 December 2017

Run in Northampton finishes on Sunday 31 December 2017

National tour dates 16 weeks till w/c 7 May 2018 tbc

There will be a cast of eight, four of whom will be actor-musicians.

 

Character breakdown as follows:

MOWGLI (Male, young looking)

Description: NON CAUCASIAN. Theatre trained actor. Small-ish and magical. Under 5’8″. Curious and charismatic. A young star. It’s Mowgli’s story. Fully fit with strong, precise physical theatre skills. Sense of humour and emotional depth. Enjoys singing and can hold a song.

Height: 150cm – 165cm

Appearance: Asian, Chinese, East Asian, Filipino/Malay/Thai, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Mixed Race, Pakistani

 

BALOO (Bear) (Male, age not specified)

Description: Larger character actor with huge sense of humour and infectious warmth. Needs to deliver a spoken word song with charisma and aplomb.

SHEER KAHN (Tiger) / MONKEY (Male, age not specified)

Description: Khan is physically imposing and believably fierce and scary. Physically powerful. Probably quite strong. Doubles with a Monkey. Possible actor musician – Preferred instruments double bass, guitar, ukulele, mandolin, some sort of woodwind – clarinet , violin, percussion  djembe/ table,  harmonica. PLEASE STATE WHICH.

HIRAN (Father Wolf) / MONKEY / ACTOR MUSICIAN (Male, age not specified)

Description: Hiran (father wolf) and Raksha have adopted Mowgli and they treat him like one of their other cubs. Doesn’t have to be traditional dad age – just a believable partner to Raksha (same ball park age). Warm and playful. Ideally with some gruff gravitas. Doubles with a monkey. Actor musician – Preferred instruments double bass, guitar, ukulele, mandolin, some sort of woodwind – clarinet , violin, percussion djembe/ table,  harmonica. PLEASE STATE WHICH.

RAKSHA (Mother Wolf) / MONKEY / ACTOR MUSICIAN (Female, age not specified)

Description: Raksha (mother wolf) and Hiran have adopted Mowgli and they treat him like one of their other cubs. Empathetic and a believable partner to Hiran (same ball park age). Doubles as Monkey.  Actor musician. Preferred instruments double bass, guitar, ukulele, mandolin, some sort of woodwind – clarinet , violin, percussion  djembe/ table,  harmonica. BAGHEERA (Panther) (Female, age not specified)

Description: Lithe, charismatic and funny. Cool and elegant panther. With lots of sass and a sense of humour. Good, confident singer for solo singing.

Appearance: African-American, Black-African, Black-Caribbean, Black-Other Areas, Mixed Race

 

AKALA (Wolf Leader) / MONKEY / ACTOR MUSICIAN (Female, age not specified)

Description: 30s+ woman, ideally older. Believably a leader and politician. Needs to be able to command respect and authority. Doubles as monkey. Possible actor musician. Preferred instruments double bass, guitar, ukulele, mandolin, some sort of woodwind – clarinet , violin, percussion  djembe/ table,  harmonica. PLEASE STATE WHICH.

KAA  (Snake) / IKKY (Porcupine) / WOLF CUB (Female, age not specified)

Description: Strong character actress able to carve up a stage with style and swish as Kaa. Ideally with diva singing voice. And sense of humour. Also plays Ikky the porcupine and a monkey. Preferred instruments double bass, guitar, ukulele, mandolin, some sort of woodwind – clarinet , violin, percussion  djembe/ tabla  Harmonica. PLEASE STATE WHICH.
