Royal & Derngate’s Youth Theatre & Young Company mission is to provide young people aged between 5 and 21 with an opportunity to explore their creativity and express themselves in a safe, supportive and inclusive environment.

We focusing primarily on developing ensemble-based theatre skills through workshops, rehearsals and performance opportunities.


Youth Theatre – For ages 5-13

Royal & Derngate Youth Theatre offers weekly workshops during term time for children and young people.

Our Youth Theatre is a great way to build confidence, make friends and learn new skills. All workshops are led by fully DBS checked, professional theatre practitioners who design projects that are fully inclusive and allow individuals to develop at their own pace.

Terms are usually 10 weeks long.

Young Company – For Ages 14-21 

Royal & Derngate Young Company work on a variety of projects over the academic year that enable members to enhance skills, experience different theatrical approaches and work with a range of professional theatre practitioners and directors.

These groups allow participants to experience different creative paths based on personal preference, availability and enthusiasm.

Our Youth Theatre & Young Company productions follow creative processes found in Royal & Derngate’s professional Made In Northampton productions and allows young people to engage with designers, writers, technicians, choreographers and directors to establish artistic visions and gain valuable knowledge of how theatre is realised on stage.

Terms are usually 10 weeks long.

Young Company: Dance

This Young Company will work each week with a choreographer learning devising dance techniques which they will then put into practice over the year in a few performances and sharings. Please be aware this company does not require strong technical ability, just a lot of enthusiasm.

ROYAL – REACT – RESPOND

Royal & Derngate Youth Theatre and Young Company are inviting members from our Northamptonshire community and beyond to create work and have it showcased on our Royal stage.

Whether you are a complete novice and fancy giving something a go or you enjoy writing on a regular basis, your pieces will be considered equally.

Following the success of last year’s Royal-React-Respond pieces, we were delighted to showcase work from many writers across both local and national communities.

This coming season, we are responding to three different productions that will be featured on our Royal stage. They are The Grapes Of Wrath, Death of A Salesman and The Blue Road.

Bursaries 

Making sure that everyone has access to the arts, regardless of personal circumstances, is very important to us. Our bursary schemes provide financial support for young people to engage in weekly groups.

Arts Award

We also offer Arts Award as part of our Youth Theatre and Young Company provision. Arts Award is a range of unique qualifications that support anyone up to age 25 to grow as artists and arts leaders through involvement in different art forms. Through Arts Award, young people gain a nationally recognised qualification, helping them to progress in education and employment or simply to enjoy engaging in the arts at Discover, Explore, Bronze, Silver and Gold levels.
