Young Company Connect

Royal & Derngate is committed to tackling barriers that prevent young people accessing quality theatre arts opportunities and our Youth Theatre & Young Company groups that run in the local community are an important part of this commitment.

Through a special partnership with Northampton International Academy, we have provided students with the opportunity to work with professional directors to further their theatre skills and work towards performances as part of the National Theatre Connections Festival.

This year, Young Company Connect is working with Director, Hannah Conway, towards performances of Like There’s No Tomorrow created by the Belgrade Young Company with Justine Themen, Claire Proctor and Liz Mytton. Their next performance is at Royal & Derngate’s regional NT Connections Festival week on Weds 6 April 5.15pm on the Royal stage. Click here to book tickets.

SongOfTheSummer FB event

Song of the Summer

Do you enjoy music? Do you love acting and want the opportunity to perform? Aged 15-25?

If the answer is ‘YES!’ then take a look at the project details below and get signed up today!

Song of the Summer is a brand-new ‘gig theatre’ piece by Tristan Jackson-Pate, co-produced by Cherwell Theatre Company and Royal & Derngate.

What is Gig Theatre?

Exactly as it sounds! It’s a performance which feels partly like a gig and partly like a play, integrating live music with scenes and physical theatre. The show is to be performed at The Picturedrome music venue with a standing audience and immersive staging.

What’s the show about?

This coming of age comedy drama explores the highs and lows of teenage life, seen through the eyes of young musicians. Set in Northampton in 2006 and featuring original indie rock music inspired by the era, the play dramatises the tension between friendship and artistic integrity, and the joys of creating music with the world at your feet.

Does it cost anything to take part?

We are delighted to welcome young actors and musicians aged 15-25 to audition for this FREE PROJECT.

How do I get involved?

When do rehearsals take place?

Weekly rehearsal sessions will take place between April-August 2022. They will be held on Tuesday nights from 7-9pm at Royal & Derngate and participants will work with professional directors, movement specialists and musical directors to develop skills in live music, acting and physical theatre and help shape the development of the piece.

In July, a professional cast of 5 actor-musicians will join the project alongside a stage management and technical theatre team, to bring the play to life. Rehearsals will continue at Royal & Derngate for participants throughout July with performances taking place from 11-28 August at The Picturedrome.

What if I haven’t done any acting before?

Participants do not need any previous experience just an interest in acting, musicianship or technical theatre. Participants also do not have to be available for all of the weekly rehearsals, or all of the performance dates in August.

Key dates:

Young Company Weekly rehearsals: Tuesday 3 May to 2 August – 7pm-9pm at Royal & Derngate

Professional Cast & Young Company Rehearsals: 11 July – 5 August at Royal & Derngate – specific times tbc.

Tech and dress rehearsals: 8-10 August at The Picturedrome

Performance Run: 20 performances between 11-28 August (includes weekdays and weekends)

The project has been funded by Arts Council England, Garfield Weston Foundation, Northamptonshire Community Foundation, The Garrick Charitable Trust and Northampton Borough Council. It is produced in partnership by Cherwell Theatre Company and Royal & Derngate, Northampton.
