Royal & Derngate, Northampton is the main venue for arts and entertainment in Northamptonshire, with audience members and participants last year numbering more than 474,000 in Northampton and beyond. As one of the major producing venues in the country, we were named Regional Theatre of the Year by the inaugural Stage 100 Awards in 2011, an accolade for which we were nominated again in 2016.

We offer a diverse programme of drama, music, dance, comedy and film, as well as our award-winning Made in Northampton productions: shows originated, cast, built, rehearsed and premiered on our stages.

As a registered charity, we remain ambitious about ensuring that our theatres are for everyone. We encourage young people to take part in our creative learning opportunities via bespoke schools partnerships and weekly activity at the theatres. This weekly programme, reaching more than 26,000 participants last year, attracts a broad section of our community, and also offers opportunities for nurturing new talent through our commitment to artist development.

We are continually developing new initiatives to ensure that the theatres continue to thrive. Public subsidy equates to less than 14% of our income, with ticket sales and donations from businesses and audiences members vital for our success. Every year we assess our local economic impact and are delighted that last year this exceeded £26m for the first time.

We are proud that a number of our team here at Royal & Derngate also deliver services for our sister venue, The Core at Corby Cube – from marketing, finance and administration to ticketing and programming: The addition of the Errol Flynn Filmhouse to our venue three years ago has received such brilliant customer feedback and proved so popular that we have just opened a second screen:

The flexible nature of our Derngate auditorium enables us to host gala dinners, product launches, conferences, weddings and flat floor standing music gigs.

We have recently revamped our bars and continue to sell highly regarded local and national brands within our Front of House areas. We have adopted Family Arts Standards and are committed to providing a warm welcome to our family audiences.

We continue to prioritise environmental sustainability, through our continued programme of LED lighting and insulation upgrades, and through our partnership with NCC and Electric Car Club. The addition of extra bicycle storage for audiences and team members this Spring will make it even easier for audiences to attend our town centre venue without using a car.

Our audiences provide fantastic feedback on all areas of our business. Our commitment to customer care is central to our vision, and we are thrilled to maintain the Certificate of Excellence from Trip Advisor for both Royal & Derngate and Errol Flynn Filmhouse.

Whether you join us as an audience member, a participant, an artist or theatre-maker, a conference attendee or a wedding guest, for a drink in the bar or for a cinema screening in EFF, we look forward to welcoming you warmly to Royal & Derngate.
