Royal & Derngate, Northampton is the main venue for arts and entertainment in Northamptonshire, with attendances for live events and films numbering 337,000 last year, and an additional 265,000 seeing its work on tour.

We were named Regional Theatre of the Year by the inaugural Stage 100 Awards in 2011, and were nominated again in 2016. We won the Management Award for Best Presentation of Touring Theatre in the 2015 UK Theatre Awards for our Made in Northampton work and Best Touring Production in 2016 for The Herbal Bed, and The Stage Ensemble Award and a Fringe First for Education, Education, Education in 2017. The Worst Witch won the 2020 Olivier Award for Best Family Show, whilst Our Lady of Kibeho was nominated for a 2020 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement, The Season earned its composers the Stage Debut award and Michael Billington named the venue Outstanding Regional Theatre of the Year 2020 in Country Life. Meanwhile, the adapted screenplay from Royal & Derngate’s original play commission of The Pope was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy Awards as Netflix’s The Two Popes.

Alongside touring nationally and internationally Royal & Derngate’s Made in Northampton productions have transferred to the West End and Broadway as well as Shakespeare’s Globe, the National Theatre and The Southbank Centre. Productions transferring to London in 2019 included The Worst Witch, Our Lady of Kibeho, Touching the Void, Education, Education, Education and The Lovely Bones. The venue also presents a diverse range of visiting productions on both the Derngate and Royal stages, featuring musicals, dance, comedy and music, including a residency from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

As a registered charity, we remain ambitious about ensuring that our theatres are for everyone. We encourage young people to take part in our creative learning opportunities via bespoke schools partnerships and weekly activity at the theatres. Our award-winning, nationally recognised Get Involved programme engaged with more than 18,500 participants last year, attracting a broad section of our community, and also offering opportunities for nurturing new talent through our commitment to artist development.

We are proud that a number of our team here at Royal & Derngate also deliver services for our sister venue, The Core at Corby Cube – from marketing, finance and administration to ticketing and programming. The addition of the Northampton Filmhouse to our venue in 2013 received such brilliant customer feedback and proved so popular that we opened a second screen in 2017. Last year Northampton Filmhouse welcomed over 76,000 audience members to screenings of the best in world, independent, British and mainstream film in the most luxurious surroundings.

The flexible nature of our Derngate auditorium enables us to host gala dinners, product launches, conferences and flat floor standing music gigs.

We have recently revamped our bars and continue to sell highly regarded local and national brands within our Front of House areas. We have adopted Family Arts Standards and are committed to providing a warm welcome to our family audiences.

Our audiences provide fantastic feedback on all areas of our business. Our commitment to customer care is central to our vision, and we are thrilled to maintain the Certificate of Excellence from Trip Advisor for both Royal & Derngate and Northampton Filmhouse.

Whether you join us as an audience member, a participant, an artist, a theatre-maker or a conference attendee, for a drink in the bar or for a cinema screening in the Filmhouse, we look forward to welcoming you warmly to Royal & Derngate.
