With
Blood Wedding and
Hedda Gabler,
The Bacchae forms part of 2012's unique trilogy of plays,
Festival of Chaos. A two month celebration in Northampton, the Festival explores the contemporary relevance of the god Dionysus.
"He is wildness. He is freedom. He is everywhere."
In the underbelly of a modern city built on money and greed, a riotous underground world is emerging. Local women are being seduced by a hedonistic god who pits ecstasy and emotion against more rational traditions of order and control.
Through song and ritual, Dionysus unleashes the sexuality of an emerging cult of female Bacchae, not only to seek revenge on the city above that he thinks has forgotten him, but to remind us that his spirit lies within all of us and we ignore him at our peril.
Directed by
Laurie Sansom and featuring a spectacular original score, playwright
Rosanna Lowe’s new version of Euripides’ Greek tragedy captures, at hurtling pace, this devastating yet surprisingly comic tale. Staged within the fascinating setting of a disused print works in the town centre, audiences are plunged into an atmospheric world of dancing, drinking and laughter on the one hand… and murder, violence and retribution on the other.
Never before has Royal & Derngate attempted to stage an event of this nature. Come and join us at
